Album Review: Stars “The Five Ghosts”

June has another hauntingly-titled release with Stars’ “The Five Ghosts”. “The Five Ghosts” is their fifth full-length album (if we don’t count the remix album “Do You Trust Your Friends?”) which was released worldwide June 22, 2010. Stars hardly seem like they need an introduction, with their last album “In Our Bedroom After the [...]

Said the Whale @ The Starlite Room in Edmonton

Last Friday was, in my opinion, perfect. I got to see Said the Whale for my birthday, I couldn’t ask for more than that! The show was at the Starlite room in Edmonton, AB. I’ve mostly been going to shows held in the basement of Starlite, at the building’s smaller venue called Brixx, so [...]

Album Preview – “Jungle Noise” by Type Monkey Type

When I first heard the band name Type Monkey Type, the first thing that popped into my head was the following Simpsons clip:

Needless to say, I was highly amused at Type Monkey Type’s choice of band name.
The “pre-apocalyptic fusion rock” group from Calgary has been an up-and-coming act since the release of their first EP [...]

Bear Trees, Aidan Knight, and Dan Mangan @ Montreal House in Peterborough

Peterborough locals Bear Trees fronted by Mike Duguay (also of The Burning Hell) opened the night to a crowded Montreal House. It was an unusually masculine lineup, but delightful nonetheless. Bear Trees played an enthusiastic rock set ending with a song about St. John’s Newfoundland. Mike proclaimed the city to be the best in Canada, [...]

Preview of The Pack a.d.’s Forthcoming Album “We Kill Computers”

Maya Miller and Becky Black of the garage rock duo The Pack a.d. are definitely a couple of workhorses. Their debut album “Tintype” was released in January 2008, and by August of the same year, they had a second record, ”Funeral Mixtape”, under their belts. Now, after a year of approximately 157 tour dates across [...]

Thrush Hermit @ The Red Dog

When the Thrush Hermit reunion tour was announced, I was super-excited and filled with nostalgia. I was even more excited and surprised to see the short tour included a stop in Peterborough at the Red Dog. I would have travelled hours, but luckily didn’t have to. Others did make quite the trek travelling [...]
